By DCC Vhell Arias, RC Las Piñas East

As early as 7:00 AM last August 23, 2008, participants trooped to Tuloy sa Don Bosco in Alabang to register for this year's first district youth service project, the District Rotaract Interact Assembly (DRIA), which was held simultaneously with the District Rotaract Interact Advisors Council (DRIAC).  By 9:00 AM, the gymnasium was full with more than 300 Rotaractors and Interactors accompanied by their advisers and Rotary club youth directors.

The D3830 Youth Service Committee was overwhelmed with the outpouring support from the Real Good Club Presidents who hosted the event. The “Lucky 13” host clubs were Makati, Makati West, Makati Poblacion, Makati Dasmariñas, Makati Paseo de Roxas, Alabang, Las Piñas East, Las Piñas West, Las Piñas North, Parañaque Metro, Parañaque Midtown, Parañaque Palanyag and Parañaque South.

As a sequel to last year's DRIA, the backdrop conceptualized by Interact DDCC PP Jojo Josol with the theme "Sharing Dreams, Making Them Real Part II" set the mood for the day's activity.

DG Boyet Limon came early and proceeded to the plenary along with SAG for Club, International and Youth Service, PP Joji Tan (Makati Dasmariñas).  Likewise present were the “youthful” members of the Youth Service Committee: DCC PP Vhell Arias (Las Piñas East), Deputy DCCs PP Jojo Josol (Las Piñas West), PP Lilibeth De La Cruz (Parañaque Metro), PP Andy Fernandez (Parañaque Midtown), DRIAC Chair PP Yoly Tan (Parañaque West), RIDEA Chair IPP Mars Jison (Parañaque North) and former DISAC Chair Linda Usabal (Rizal West).  Incumbent District Rotaract Representative Cathy Gonzales and Immediate Past District Rotaract Representative Joannie Sitoy led the clubs of Rotaractors and Interactors.

The Interact Club of LPNHS Manunugtog Kawayan played for the Entrance of Colors and the Philippine National Anthem. DCC for Youth Vhell Arias and District Rotaract Representative Cathy Gonzales called the meeting to order. Pres. Bobby Lim of Makati West acknowledged the presence of guests while an empowering welcome remarks from DRC PP Lilibeth De La Cruz followed.

DG Boyet, in his address, apprised everyone on D3830’s Youth service programs and directions, particularly the continuing development of Interact and Rotaract clubs.  He commended the Youth Service Committee for its efforts toward achieving the District’s thrusts for the youth and encouraged the delegates to work earnestly to MAKE DREAMS REAL. After his speech, he installed inducted the new Rotaract officers led by DRR Cathy Gonzales.

DRIAC Chair Yoly Tan introduced the Rotaract and Interact Advisers and announced the holding of election of officers for RY 2008-09 during the break out session.

Plenary Session I focused on moral values and youth involvement during these challenging times.  PDG Sonny Coloma's vibrantly motivating speech has, as usual, left the youthful delegates in awe and energized.  He was introduced by Pres Nestor Dacillo of Parañaque West.

IPDRR Joannie Sitoy gave an account on her recent highly enriching experience at the International Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) convention in California.  Pres. Uye Flores of Parañaque Midtown rendered a song while RAC RCP Metro Kapwa rocked everyone with a hip-hop dance number before lunch break.

DCC Vhell Arias gave an overview of the topic "Strengthening Clubs" for the break out sessions where Rotaract and Interact officers were lectured on core leadership skills, goal-setting and implementation, planning good clubs, community professional development service projects and making international service projects.

Speakers for the break out sessions were D3830 DRR Cathy Gonzales, DDCC Interact PP Jojo Josol, IPDRR Chock Encabo of D3810, PDRR Mhon Brazas of D3820 and PDRR Cathy Deang of D3800.  The Session Moderators were DS/IPP Rachel Habla, Dir/IPP Randy Pabona, Dir/IPP Aldrin Buelo, and IPDRR Joannie Sitoy.

Plenary Session II  was centered on the emotional learning of the youth through the real life testimonial sharing and songs rendered by IPDRR Chock Encabo of the Rotaract Club of Manila Metro.

DRIAC Chair Yoly Tan was with the 24 Rotaract and Interact Advisers who unanimously elected Allan R. Elman of the Rotaract Club of Youth Media Network Philippines (YMNP), sponsored by Parañaque Metro, as President of the District Rotaract Interact Advisor's Council (DRIAC). With Pres Allan at the helm, our district is definitely assured of well-informed advisers to better guide our young leaders in the successful implementation of their projects.

The last part of this learning activity featured group presentations of the youth participants and distribution of certificates.  DDCC Jojo Josol’s closing remarks capped the whole day affair.

The remarkably well attended assembly marked the beginning of our Rotary clubs’ more active involvement in youth programs.  It was an opportunity for Rotarians to gain a sense of fulfillment in working with young people, teaching them about Rotary’s service above one’s self, and helping prepare the new generation to become the Real Good Rotarians of tomorrow.
