The Rotary Club of Parañaque South (RCPS), under the leadership of Pres. Ed Castillo, conducted four major community service projects in a one-day activity last November 22, 2008 at the Presentation of the Child Jesus Parish in BF Homes Parañaque City. Aimed at promoting the welfare and development of the less-privileged communities and putting into action the 2008-2009 Rotary International theme "Make Dreams Real," RCPS implemented the following: |

Child Mortality Reduction Program
The activity’s resource speaker, Ann Elenita Mañalac, a certified public health educator, talked on “New Born Screening and Immunization” through a Power Point presentation. In attendance were 20 mothers from the depressed communities of the parish. The very active question and answer portion of the program obviously showed the mothers’ interests in promoting the welfare of their children. Ann Elenita is the spouse of IPP Martin Mañalac.
Anti-TB Program
The program focused on identifying children, 5 years old and below, who have acquired Primary Complex (pediatric form of Tuberculosis). Club Secretary Dr. Dan Constantino showed a short Power Point presentation on the topic and explained to the mothers the importance of tuberculin skin testing (Mantoux Test). This is a prelude of an upcoming RCPS project in January 2009 where free tuberculin skin testing and subsequent therapy will be provided, also for free for those found to be positive.
Drug Abuse Awareness Program
Pres. Ed Castillo gave a short talk to the mothers regarding the importance of awareness to illegal drugs including Rugby solvent which is prevalent in their community. The club will follow-up this program with more detailed discussions and a larger audience on January 2009.
Fight Against Malnutrition (Soup Kitchen)
For several years, this feeding program has been an ongoing club project headed by Dir. Rudy Obial. About 50 undernourished children were each fed with a hot meal of rice and adobo prepared by parish volunteers in cooperation with RCPS members. |
