Rotary and Parañaque City: For Children and Environment
December 8, 2008, Parañaque City
By Rtn Bren Del Rosario, RC Parañaque Metro South

Rotary Year 2008-2009 is the year for children and the environment.

In his inaugural speech, RI President Dong Kurn “DK” Lee emphasized on his desire “to see reducing the child mortality rate become a key goal of club and district service projects in the year ahead.”  Reading between the lines, Pres. DK’s message also encompasses environment protection as he wanted all Rotary Clubs to work with him towards realizing the dream of a happier, healthier and more peaceful world.

District Governor Edgardo “Boyet” Limon, in his own inaugural speech during the D3830 Handover at Hotel Intercon, Makati City last June 5, 2008, asked everyone to “listen to the voices of our children and let us make their dreams real.”  He also asked all rotarians to share with him the passion to rise above the challenge of our year’s theme: "to reduce the terrible rate of child mortality and to preserve the environment.”

Heeding Pres. DK’s and Gov. Boyet’s calls to action, representatives of D3830 Parañaque Clubs and the respective chairmen of the clubs’ adopted 16 Barangays, formalized their forging of ties to work together in the implementation of childcare and environment service programs, in a signing ceremony at the Forum Hall of Casino Filipino in Parañaque City last Dec. 1, 2008.

To further strengthen the programs, Gov. Boyet Limon, for D3830, and Mayor Florencio “Jun” M. Bernabe Jr., for the City of Parañaque, signed 2 memoranda of agreement, respectively for Child Mortality Reduction and Save Parañaque River, and effectively establishing the District - City level partnership.  The Parañaque club presidents and the Barangay Chairmen, on the other hand, signed the same agreements for the Barangay level implementation.

Both D3830 and the City Government agree that the high incidence of child mortality in the country is unacceptable in a modern humane society.  It poses a serious hindrance to socio-economic progress and a threat to effective nation building.  Meanwhile, because of rapid urbanization and neglect, Parañaque River is now basically dead and must immediately be revived back to life.  Maybe not much for it’s historical significance, but for it’s ecological value, not only to the residents of Parañaque, but Metro Manila as a whole.

These predicaments brought together the D3830 Rotarians and Parañaque Barangay officers vowed to work hand-in-hand in giving to prioritize programs that directly address such concerns.  The signatory RC presidents include Brenda Hernandez of Parañaque Metro (who adopted Bgy. BF Homes), Pol Casale of Parañaque Metro South (who adopted Bgy. San Antonio), Ed Castillo of Parañaque South, Uye Flores, of Parañaque Midtown, Sonny Pilares of Parañaque Central and Bong Obrero Jr., of Palanyag Parañaque.

The event featured discussions from Lawyer Antonio S. Tria, Chairman and CEO of Environmental Counselors, Inc., who talked about the “Linis Ilog Parañaque” initiative and Rotarian Amie Ortillo-Sotto, Chairperson of Nutrition & Feeding, Community Service Committee of RC Parañaque North, who elaborated on Child Mortality issues.  District Governor-Elect Sid Garcia and Senior Assistant Governor Sally Tongson also attended and gave their inspiring views on the issues at hand.

Past President Ramon “Mon” Veluz of RC Makati Bonifacio was the emcee of the night.
