13th Charter Anniversary Celebration of the Rotary Club of Pohang Jeil
A RCMS delegation composed of Pres. Edna A. Gan, PP Rod Santos, PE Rey Altre, PN Boy Dizon, Sec. Pabs Abayari, Jr. and 2 Anns, with Congresswoman Dulce Ann Hofer and Virginia Altre, visited Pohang Jeil, Korea last December 11 to 14, 2008 to attend the 13th charter anniversary celebration of its sister club, the Rotary Club of Pohang Jeil (RCPJ) headed by incumbent Pres. Lee Gwang Su.
Established by then classmates, Presidents Rod Santos and Byeoung Cheoul Ryu, the RCMS-RCPJ sisterhood flourished beyond Rotary ties that spans 10 years. It’s a friendship that defies both language and distance barriers treasured by their members. The sister clubs have since been jointly involved at numerous large-scale service programs including the recently inaugurated RCMS flagship project “Trees for Life” at Zamboanga Sibugay, and the RI-approved project to procure rehabilitation equipment for the disabled people of Yeti Shelter in Gyeongju City, Gyeongsang, Korea, under TRF Matching Grant No. 68579. |

The RCPJ charter anniversary celebration on Dec. 12 was a well-prepared and attended affair. It was graced by the presence of District 3630 Governor Kim Won Pyo as the keynote speaker. Aside from praising RCPJ’s various successful humanitarian projects, the governor was also proud that current RI President, DK Lee, hails from Korea. Also present were RCPJ Charter President Gong Won Lik and guest Rotarians from its local sister clubs. The RCPJ membership of 67, led by Pres. Lee Gwang Su, came in full force with their Anns, beautiful in their traditional Korean costumes.
Pres. Edna Gan and Pres. Lee Gwang Su pledged to strengthen their clubs' sisterhood relationship and reiterated their firm commitment to Rotary’s Four Avenues of Service. After the exchange of gifts, picture taking, a sumptuous Korean dinner was served and the night was capped by a Korean style fellowship. Wiyayo! (Cheers!) |

RCMS as English and Philippine History Teachers
Highlighting RCMS’ trip to Korea, the Salcedians visited the Pohang Jeil Elementary School, the largest in Pohang Jeil. They were welcomed by the school principal together with some Korean Teachers and 3 Filipino English Teachers.
After a brief tour of the school’s facilities, the Salcedians were each assigned a classroom with about 50 students, ages 10 to 12, to teach them English and Philippine History. Pleasantly surprised, they gamely accepted their assigned tasks. Armed with a stock knowledge, the 7-member RCMS delegation taught English and Philippine History to the Korean elementary students for 45 minutes. |

The students were not difficult to teach since they already know many English words. They were all eager to know more about the Philippines. They got particularly amazed when Pres. Edna Gan drew a map of the country on the board and identified the islands, explained its history, culture, people and the food they eat, even why Filipinos are proficient in English. It was also good to know that the children’s education, from tuition fee to books, except food, are all shouldered by the Korean Government.
It was truly a refreshing experience! |
