The GSE Team from District 3830 Philippines was warmly received by the Rotary Clubs of District 7450 - Southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. Led by Team Leader, PP Baby Bunye, the 5-member GSE Team USA 2009 made major waves in Pennsylvania and beyond!
As reported at the D7450 website: "District 7450 enthusiastically welcomes our visiting friends! - GSE Chair Karen Strawhacker, PDG Russ deFuria, Dawn deFuria and Kerry Costello-Null welcomed the incoming GSE team to District 7450 on Saturday evening, April 4th. On Sunday, April 5th, an orientation breakfast was held at the Philadelphia Marriot West and the team was then picked up by the host families from the Ardmore Club." The Team's presence has surely sparked the interest of the D7450 Rotarians. At the joint meeting of the Rotary Clubs of Longwood and West Grove-Avondale at the Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, at 6:30 AM last April 16 (the day before their district conference), about 150 members from 5 Rotary clubs attended. The Philippine Team was presented on stage and individually talked about their respective backgrounds, gave an overview of D3830 and showed an audio-visual presentation on tourism in the Philippines. The American Rotarians and their guests surely enjoyed the team's performance of the Spanish-inspired Filipino folk dance, Cariñosa.
In its Sunrise E-News (bulletin) Issue #16, April 21, 2009, Longwood Rotary Club reported:
"This week was a very special Longwood Rotary meeting. We were privileged to have as our guests the Rotary District 7450-sponsored Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team from the Philippines that is touring our area during the month of April. Our neighboring Rotary Clubs from Oxford, West Grove-Avondale, and Kennett evening joined us for a special vocational presentation about our new international friends' life in their home country, including a special performance of a traditional Philippine Dance!"

At the District Conference, the D7450 Rotarians were once again charmed by the Team's performance of Cariñosa and the, likewise, festive Filipino folk dance, Subli. Since then, Rotary clubs have been gathering in joint meetings and inviting them to see their lively performance. At the meeting hosted by the Greater West Chester Sunrise Rotary Club on April 15, the presentation of the Philippine Team was recorded and podcasted by the D7450 Rotary Radio (go to the D7450 Rotary Radio webpage and choose the "April 15th" entry to listen to the podcast).
On April 28, at about noon time, Team Leader PP Baby Bunye and her team members were interviewed by local newspaper Bucks County Courier Times (the article appeared last May 3, 2009 at the paper's website. Download a PDF copy of the print article). The next morning, which really excited PP Baby, she was introduced by a local radio station on air. After the radio talk show, some Filipinos went to the station to see her. It happened on her vocational day. PP Baby was simply ecstatic!
The D3830 Team has been to Pennsylvania's historic sites, such as the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Valley Forge on their first week; and visited cultural sites, such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Longwood Gardens and the Amish lifestyle, even had lunch with an Amish family in Lancaster County, on the second week. They also toured Washington DC and parts of New York City.
They have met with Pennsylvania State Representative Carole Rubley and some high officials from the Philadelphia City Hall, led by Mayor Michael Nutter, who gave them some lectures on how they do things in the city.
The GSE Team USA is scheduled to return home on May 2, 2009. |
