The Rotary Club of Makati’s Committee on Family Health & Nutrition, under PP Freddie Borromeo, has kick-started the club’s nutrition program for RY 2008-2009 with the launching of two feeding modules in Calatagan, Batangas.  The launch took place last August 2 in Barangay Tanagan, Calatagan with Pres. Larry Boyer with Ann Tere, PDG Tony Quila and Ann Jojo Borromeo lending their support to PP Freddie.

On August 9, two other modules were launched in Olongapo City.  The beneficiaries include children belonging to Aeta families residing in far-flung barangays of Zambales. The Olongapo program is being conducted in partnership with the Rotary Club of Olongapo Centennial.  Dick Upton, a member of RC Makati and sponsor of one of the modules, personally joined the trip to Olongapo to meet the children and their parents and see for himself how the project works.

Under the program, children are provided one hot, nutritious meal and a glass of milk every day for 6 months. The meals are planned and prepared by the children’s parents, who also do the budgeting and marketing and are required to attend classes on nutrition, family planning, responsible parenthood and old-fashioned family values.

The RC Makati Nutrition Program, which aims to help stamp out malnutrition in the country, has been running since RY 2004-2005. It is implemented in selected sites in partnership with the Kabisig ng Kalahi, an NGO engaged in nutrition initiatives, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the concerned local governments and corporate sponsor Mead Johnson.
