The Heather Kinross Center (HKC), the skills training arm of the Rotary Club of Makati, has kicked off the Training Program in Metal Arc Welding for the second batch of trainees from the Club’s adopted Gawad Kalinga community in Villa Paraiso, Parañaque City. Classes started last Monday, September 1, at the Tuloy sa Don Bosco Village (TDBV) in Alabang. The RCM-funded training program is implemented in partnership with the Tuloy Foundation, Inc. (TFI).  It aims to equip the trainees with competent skills in basic metal arc welding to eventually qualify them for jobs.  Leading HKC is Chairman Dean Velasco while TDBV is run by Fr. Rocky Evangelista.

The training program will run for three months with the graduation set for mid December to allow for holidays and possible disruption of classes due to typhoons and heavy rains. Classes are held five days a week, Monday to Friday with the maximum number of trainees per class at 25 for best results.

Trainees will be given lessons on welding principles and undergo hands-on training in metal arc welding under the tutelage of experienced TFI trainers. The course also includes values formation as an integral part of the program. As training sponsor, RCM also provides transport allowance to the trainees. But their families are to provide their snacks, shoulder the cost of the pre-OJT medical checkup and, for those who make the grade, the TESDA accreditation fee. This requirement for families to share the financial responsibility for their children’s training is meant to discourage overdependence on dole-outs.

The trainees, together with their parents, attended an orientation session on August 23 at the GK Villa Paraiso multipurpose hall where they were briefed on the course program and requirements, and what is expected of them. The parents were made aware on the importance of giving support to their children to enable them to focus and maximize the training program’s benefits.
