Las Piñas Dream Makers Hold “Damayan Sa Lawa” Project
September 15, 2008, Las Piñas City
By DCC Vhell Arias, PP and Club Secretary, RC Las Piñas East

A very successful and fulfilling medical mission, for the benefit of the residents of Pinagbayanan, Pila, Laguna, was jointly conducted by RCs Las Piñas (RCLP) and Las Piñas East (RCLPE) last September 13, 2008 in response to Rotary’s thrust on child mortality reduction.

The all-women club RCLPE was led by Pres Yoly Yorro, while its mother club, RCLP was led by Club Treasurer Roger Salceda who represented Pres Boy Molina.  The visiting Rotarians, medical and staff volunteers were welcomed by the warm hospitality of the local government officials and constituents.  They were escorted to the project venue by Delta Force, a group of motorcycle-riding volunteers under Barangay Captain Ruben Albayda and Councilor Paolo Malimutin from the National Irrigation Authority.

The day’s activities commenced with the planting of mahogany and malunggay trees near the town’s community day-care center to emphasize awareness on the significance and value of environment protection and conservation among the townspeople.

At about 8:00 AM, the beneficiaries started arriving and registered for the free maternal and pediatric medical care services.  Six doctors with nurses and health care volunteers from Las Pinas gladly rendered services, not only to the mothers and children, but also to the male members of their families.  RCLPE and RCLP members assisted in the registration and the dispensing of medicines.  They also distributed free Gardenia bread products.

An elderly woman who brought in on a pedal tricycle was the recipient of a wheelchair donated by RC Makati Bel-Air, which was facilitated by DCC for Community Service, PP Mon Veluz. More than a hundred availed of the free chest examination by the Philippine Tuberculosis Society Mobile X-ray Unit courtesy of RC Makati’s Dr. Puno Pena.

While boarding their vehicles, a woman approached the Rotarians and said, "Salamat po sa inyo at galing pa po pala kayo sa Las Piñas." (Thank you for coming all the way from Las Piñas.).  To which, they replied "Ganyan po ang ROTARY." (That's how Rotary works.).  The smiles of gratitude of the more than 200 beneficiaries biding the service team goodbye made it all a wonderful, fun and worthwhile day to the D3830 Dream Makers.

With the passing views of green farm lands along the highway on their way home, everyone cheered "It feels good!  Real good to do good!  And proud to be Rotarians!”
