The Rotary Club of Puerto Princesa (RCPP) will be implementing this year two community service projects at a total cost of US$67,465 that will be funded under the Rotary Foundation (TRF) Matching Grant program.  They are the Bio-Sand Filter (Clean Water) Project (US$31,177) and the Poultry Raising Project (US$36,288).

Bio-Sand Filter Project

In response to Rotary International's thrust in providing safe drinking water, the Bio-Sand Filter Project directly addresses the lack of access to clean water at various beneficiary sites in Palawan where significant portions of their population live below the poverty line with limited access to local health services.  The Bio-Sand Filter is a simple low-cost water filtration and treatment contraption that will provide potable water to those who need it most.  Increasing access to safe water decreases the incidence of water-related diseases like diarrhea, cholera, skin irritation and malnutrition

RCPP is in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Burnsville of RI District 5950 in Minnesota, USA, as it's matching grant partner, while the project’s implementor is the non-governmental organization, A Single Drop of Safe Water (ASDSW), and supported by the Palawan NGO Network.  The year-long implementation consists of capacity building and livelihood components in three target areas.  It includes a 5-week training program for the participants on how to build and install bio-sand water filters in schools, health units, day care centers and other public venues.  The participants will be organized as a Rotary Community Corps (RCC) to ensure the project's long-term sustainability.

Poultry Raising Project

The Poultry Raising Project is a partnership of RCPP with the Rotary Club of Sendai Aoba of RI District 2520, Japan, in cooperation with the Japan-based Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement (OISCA) in Palawan.  The beneficiaries are selected public schools in the municipality of Aborlan and its 900 schoolchildren and mothers.  This year-long project consists of poultry raising and egg production as an income generating activity, and using the proceeds to help fund the educational needs of the students and school facilities.

The implementation will include the participation of the Agricultural Training Center and an agriculture committee that will be organized for the purpose and will have as members the municipal mayor, barangay officials, other agriculture-related service groups and the school officials.  RCPP will manage the matching grant funds and handle the overall monitoring and evaluation of the project.
